     Principal's Message

Welcome to Northern Lights Secondary School’s website.

We may be small in size but we are big in spirit. O-O-O-W-L (noise insert of howl).
If you don’t know, Moosonee and the island of Moose Factory are located at the tip of James Bay in Northern Ontario. To get here, you would need to travel by plane or train – there are no roads to this isolated community. Because of this, there are many unique features about our school.

Like other high schools, we have students who are taking courses in Grades 9 through 12. But, with around 180 students, we are one of the smallest high schools in the province. Although the majority of our students travel to school by bus, those students who live on Moose Factory Island travel daily by freighter canoe, helicopter or a winter ice road!

Many of our students are of Aboriginal decent, so our school calendar is modified to include an earlier start time so that we have a week-long Hunting Break in the fall. Many families also go hunting in the spring, when the geese are flying north. As a school we try to support these traditional activities whenever we can. Daily, we try to incorporate four important traditions in the form of a medicine wheel: Respect, Diligence, Teamwork and Excellence. A highlight of our school calendar is the yearly Elders’ Tea, held in December, when we invite the Elders of the community for an afternoon to share some holiday spirit and some treats.

Take some time to check out this website created and designed by our students. This is a great school and I hope you enjoy learning about us.
