The Town of Moosonee |
|||||
The James Bay area has a rich past and an intriguing present. Moosoneee is known as the gateway to the arctic. From Moosonee you can travel by plane or by water to points further north during the summer and by land over frozen winter roads during the winter. The first people to call the area home were nomads who were hunters and gatherers, and ancestors of those we know today as the Swampy Cree. Moose Factory, the oldest settlement in Ontario, was first used as a trading post by the Hudson's Bay Company for fur trading. Many of the original buildings are still standing and can be toured in the summer months. Moosonee and Moose Factory have a thriving tourist trade during the summer months as people travel here for one day trips to see the true north. The area is also beginning to provide winter tourists with great outdoor winter activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling. Today the community of Moosonee's population is about 2,500 while Moose Factory has a population consisting of about 3,000. Moosonee and Moose Factory make up the largest Cree community in Canada.
