What is it? College Link is a high school education in a college environment. College Link was created as an additional pathway to high school graduation. The program provides the opportunity for students to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) on a college campus rather than in a secondary school environment. In Moosonee, the program is offered through a partnership between Northern Lights Secondary School and Northern College, Moosonee Campus. Students will typically take three secondary school courses and one college dual-credit course. Successful completion of the dual-credit course will earn the student both a high school credit and a college credit. At the end of the semester students could earn four courses towards their OSSD. The high school course options include in-class, online elearning and Independent Learning Courses. Who is the Program for? College Link is for students who need 10 or fewer credits to graduate. Though exceptions can be made, it is designed to help students graduate within one academic year. Some students enrol in College Link after having been away from school for several years, others enrol right after their grade 12 year. When Does it Start and When Does it Take Place? Because the college and the high school’s semester start and end dates differ, the college dual-credit course will begin on January 5th, 2010 and the high school courses will begin February 1, 2010. The program runs from 8:30-12:30 weekdays. The college dual-credit course is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Why was it Needed? Some students are not able to finish their OSSD within the regular four year timeframe due to various reasons and circumstances. The decision to go back to regular high school can be difficult since they must commit themselves to the pattern of full day studies in a highly controlled learning atmosphere designed for teens. Before College Link, the only additional option was to complete Independent Learning Courses at home, yet these courses lack the support of an onsite teacher and a class of peers. College Link bridges this gap by providing both teacher and peer support, but separate from regular high school environment. How
is it Different? College Link is a new, dynamic way of learning where students get experience college expectations and learning in a mature atmosphere. Students are encouraged and assisted in exploring their work, career and life goals. The program encourages students in the direction of college or apprenticeship training. It is a pathway towards lifelong learning and preparation for careers. College Link class sizes are small and the teaching methods are flexible to meet individual student needs. ‘There’s always free coffee and the atmosphere is relaxed. It’s no problem to listen to your ipod while you work.’ What Courses are Offered? The College dual-credit course for Winter 2010 is ‘Social Work and First Nations People.’ The high school courses for winter 2010 are yet to be announced. Their selection is dependent on enrolled students’ needs. How is this Program Different from College Prep Courses? In College Link, students will receive high school credits towards their OSSD, not a GED. This program is also unique because students are enrolled in an actual college course. College Link students are registered students at both Northern College and Northern Lights Secondary School students where they are considered full time students. How do I Sign up?
